MOVE OVER BLOGGER-HOGGERS!

MOVE OVER BLOGGER-HOGGERS!

I am hesitant in posting this as I do not want to cause any blog wars. But the problem of blogger-hogging really bugs me so here goes!

There are a handful of bloggers who dominate the list of recent posts. They post many times a day, often only minutes separating their repeated posts and usually containing images that can be widely found elsewhere. There is no point naming-and-shaming them because it is clear who they are.

Please do not get me wrong, I strongly believe that bloggers can blog about whatever they want, whether it is words, images or a mixture of both. I also believe that bloggers can blog as much or as little as they want. I am a liberal.

But being liberal means that people are is free to do what they want provided that they do not harm others and provided that all people can enjoy these freedoms. But the blogger-hoggers are preventing other less prolific bloggers from getting on the list of recent posts for any significant length of time and thus reducing the chances of their posts being read.

This problem is particularly pronounced for new bloggers. The blogger-hoggers make it more difficult for new bloggers to get noticed and get established. Blogland has been in decline for some time; it needs new bloggers to rejuvenate blogland.

Do you have any opinions on blogger-hogging?
Why do you think some bloggers are blogger-hoggers?

I do not know precisely why bloggers post repeatedly within a short period of time. But I suspect that it is a way of gaming the system to get to the top of the list of active blogs, widely seen as a list of top bloggers. Fair enough, nothing so intrinsically wrong in that - we are all free to play games - but they are extrinsically and adversely affecting other bloggers, particularly new bloggers.

One of the few advantages of the new format is that blogger-hogging will not be so readily rewarded on two counts. First, blog posts only show one image per post; other images can only be seen by actively clicking that post. This should nudge bloggers to post fewer images. Second, the list of popular blogs is simply a list of the most followed blogs; the list includes many inactive blogs that still are followed by many.

Given that this post will only appear on the list of recent posts for about 30 minutes before the blogger-hoggers start posting, this post is unlikely to lead to blog wars because no one will see it!

Do you have any opinions on blogger-hogging? - I pretty much ignore them - well until I'm in the mood for some porn.

Why do you think some bloggers are blogger-hoggers? - Attention whores.

But don't forget that (at least in blogs) there is a section called "newly created blogs". I used to get a kick out of spotting "up and comers" - signing on as Watcher #4 to someone that soon had hundreds.

I couldn't agree more with everything you say here. I can only imagine it's an attention thing? You'll see that the men who do it top the list of male bloggers. The women who do it are near, or atop the other list. I think it's idiotic and, worst of all, selfish.

Sadly since blogging has become a competition this will probably not change. It's just too bad their viewers continue to look at their all too boring posts. These bloggers seem to be intelligent people and if they put an effort into a real post, I'm almost sure they would have real followers

This issue has been blogged about several times, but it still continues. And in saying that on Tuesdays I usually post three blogs because of my NFL contest posting the winners, and then the game. Then I post my Sexy Santa's Helpers. This may seem like blog - hogging but honestly that is not my intention..

Do you have any opinions on blogger-hogging? Many people complain about this and all it does from what I have seen is cause more issues in blog land.

Why do you think some bloggers are blogger-hoggers? I think like you said some people just want to blog.

I hope you enjoy a relaxing Sunday my friend..

I tend to click on the list of new posts of people I have already followed. So the fact that someone is posting 5 or 6 blogs in a row that show up in the new post makes no difference to me. Plus the new posts show up on my followed list, way before they do on the new posts list. I just don't look at that list except to note how long it takes for my own post to show up........and usually by the time it does, there's already several posts above mine. Ah well.

And by the same token I have a lot of bloggers I follow that are pretty much inactive, but I keep them on my followed list just in case.

I don't know what the answer is going to be, unless we have the capability to to tailor our lists on the community side to our own likings.

And new bloggers? with being new and supposedly their posts not going live right away over on the community side because they haven't reached the proper level, well, that's certainly going to be interesting in how anyone is going to find them.

I think the ones who hog the blogs are doing it for attention. It's annoying as hell to see the list of recently posted blogs and see it taken up by the same blogger with anywhere from 3 to 8 or more posts, one after another. Of course, the only benefit is recognizing which bloggers those are and it makes it easy to skip over their posts. But if you want to catch any of the new bloggers, you have to click on "View All" to bring up the full list of who's posted and see what's available.

You are no blogger-hogger. You post for a purpose. Please do not feel that my post was aimed at you. It definitely wasn't aimed at bloggers who post a lot but at bloggers who post for seemingly no other purpose other than to post a lot in order to get to the top of the greasy pole.

I think Andrew is trying to work on an algorithm that'll push "quality" posts more toward the top of the new blogs list. However, I think one of the factors he included was the blogger's "level", so that unfortunately is not going to help with the problem of new bloggers being invisible. Maybe the beta site needs a separate section for new bloggers (and we veterans need to make a practice of checking them out so they feel encouraged).

But I reserve the right not to encourage someone who just does one post that's advertising their availability for receiving a blowjob.

With the goal of showing good content on the main page of "posts" and "blogs", I came up with a little formula that uses
if you are a gold member
if you have high "level"
if you include a photo or poll
if the text is long
if it gets lots of likes
if it gets lots of comments

Yes I find it annoying too. I'm sure it is done purely for the blog views and nothing else. I've learned to skip over them in the list but yes, they do occupy a lot of space and push other people's blogs off the front page.

Not only are those pics (the few I've looked anyway) publicly available, that probably means they are subject to copyright and shouldn't be plastered over a blog without giving appropriate credit to the owner.

Pleasing to hear there is something being done in the new community to redress the balance.

My post is definitely not aimed at bloggers who post a lot; it's about those who post in a formulaic way with many posts within a few minutes of each other and, by doing so, they hog the recent posts' list and deny airtime to others. In some ways, it's the site's problem with its algorithms. Bloggers are free to post whatever and whenever they want.

But those multiple blog postings submitted within minutes of each other containing little more than images taken from the internet rarely trend. It's just a list but they deprive others, particularly new bloggers, of attention.
Thanks for stopping by.

You have misunderstood what I was talking about; I'm not going on about bloggers who post several times a day. I'm going on about bloggers who post repeatedly within a few minutes of each post and thus hogging the list of recent posts. And my point was that this has an adverse effect on other bloggers, particularly new bloggers.
There are bloggers here who write well.
There is an irony in you posting on my blog because I'm not allowed to post on your blog. For some reason you have blocked me even though we have had no dealinghs with each other until very recently.
I know exactly what your talking about... but who are you the blog police? Mind your own business or like a few of you say you want quality posts... then post something that is quality, please, because there are very few of you that even understand what a blog exactly is, lol.

Let me ask you this since I notice you did it on this post, we have a blogger here that clicks on her own posts to boost her own views, she quotes people 2, 3, 4... times to boost her comment totals on the main blog page, do you consider that hogging too? There are two opinions to respond to someones comment on a post, but a few people only want to inflate their comment total.

As far being blocked from my blog that goes back to a comment you made similar to this post, if you complain about people who blog similar to what I do, why would I want you viewing my blog, right?

I am not the blog police. I was making an observation pointing out the effects of of blog-hogging. Fine, you don't agree with me.
And fine, you don't like my blog. Other bloggers do.
I don't think I've ever commented on your blog.
You are free to stop me seeing your blog - I have no desire to visit your blog, but I do find it hypocritical that you view my blog to post charmless comments.

Here here! The problem is these blog hogs don't read other blogs so they probably take no note of your comments. But they are worthy comments. Just today I noticed this one particular lady who constantly posts pictures of other women. Yes, men are visual animals. But IMHO, if you consistently post pictures of other women, why would I want to view your blog? For me, blogs are more content/conversation oriented than picture oriented. As you have noted, if I was interested in pictures, this would hardly be a site that I would visit for that. In fact, usually the pictures posted are not very alluring.

Who knows what the future will hold. Pictures are for kids. Reality is for adults.

Another point is why do people blog but then set their filter to friends only? Maybe there should be another option incorporated here such as blog rooms for very limited audiences.

As you say, blogs should be personal. There's lots of ways a blog can be personal, but posting photos taken by someone else isn't that personal.

It tends to be female bloggers who set their blogs to friends-only. I guess it's a way of reducing any unwanted attention.

Clearly there are financial rewards for blogger hogging. Being the top blogger gets some kind of site handouts, such as points or memberships. There might be more than just that, but it starts there.
